I, Frankenstein

January is where you’ll find the dregs of the movie business—films that studios would rather nobody see, except they spent so much money on them that they feel compelled to release them. I, Frankenstein fits this bill perfectly. It looks possibly worse than Green Lantern, the Ryan Reynolds flop. Aaron Eckhart is the titular character, and in this retelling of the Frankenstein story, he is a muscular, super human who is also immortal who joins in a fight between mega-powerful gargoyles and demons. Um, what?

Perfect For: Fans of the graphic novel on which it is based.

What the Critics Say: Listen closely. That is the sound of nobody talking.

Gimme Shelter

With Spring Breakers and now Gimme Shelter, Disney star Vanessa Hudgens is trying hard to shed her teen dream image. She stars as an abused, knocked-up, runaway daughter of a drug-addicted mother (Rosario Dawson, who also gets ugly for the role) who finds solace in a shelter for other teens. Hudgens cut off her hair, gained a bunch of weight and looks unrecognizable. Whether or not she can act is still a question.

Perfect For: People who like formulaic “gritty” dramas.

What the Critics Say: Trying too hard and overshoots as a result. Writes the Boston Globe: “‘Gimme Shelter’ suffers from stilted dialogue, less than crackling storytelling and vaguely drawn characters.”

Our Take: Maybe better suited for an after-school special?
