This week at the movies: The adventurous Angry Birds “flight” up the big screen; Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe are an unlikely (yet hysterical) pair of detectives; and Seth Rogen and Zac Efron are back to bring us more laughs in their parents-versus-students college comedy sequel.

Angry Birds

Flightless birds lead a mostly happy existence, except for Red (Jason Sudeikis), who just can't get past the daily annoyances of life. His temperament leads him to anger management class, where he meets fellow misfits Chuck (Josh Gad) and Bomb (Danny McBride). Red becomes even more agitated when his feathered brethren welcome green pigs to their island paradise. As the swine begin to get under his skin, Red joins forces with Chuck and Bomb to investigate the real reason behind their mysterious arrival. Maya Rudolph, Peter Dinklage, Bill Hader, Sean Penn, also lend their voices.

Perfect for: The kiddos, and anyone who is familiar with the game (you’ve got to admit – the mobile app is pretty addicting!).

What the Critics Say: The voice cast of notable comedy actors is definitely impressive. And the plot? Lots of fun. Rolling Stone claims: “[T]here's no denying the movie's high spirits or its irresistible invitation to shake your sillies out.” Variety agrees, and even predicts a successful sequel or two: “The Angry Birds Movie [is] a fast, fizzy and frenetically entertaining extension of the manic gaming franchise that, at its zenith, had children of all ages glued to their smartphone screens. Establishing a basic psychological motivation for the fiery disposition shared by the feathered folk of Bird Island, this irreverent origin story takes an appropriately loose, elastic approach to its larger narrative, with frequent detours to fill in daffier details of its mad, mad, mad, mad story world… Brightly accessible to viewers who have never so much as tapped the app, it could easily found a big-screen franchise of its own.”

Our Take: Sounds like the perfect weekend family flick. Plus, seeing the whole gang of Angry Birds come to life on screen – what’s not to love?

The Nice Guys

Holland March (Ryan Gosling) is a down-on-his-luck private eye in 1977 Los Angeles. Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) is a hired enforcer who hurts people for a living. Fate turns them into unlikely partners after a young woman named Amelia (Margaret Qualley) mysteriously disappears. Healy and March soon learn the hard way that other dangerous people are also looking for Amelia. Their investigation leads to some dark places as anyone else who gets involved in the case seems to wind up dead. Also starring Kim Basinger.

Perfect for: Those who love mysteries or crime-comedy films; fans of Ryan Gosling; fans of Russell Crowe.

What the Critics Say: The critics are cheering pretty positively for this one. Gosling and Crowe’s on screen chemistry is outstanding, and the story is both hilarious and clever. Variety says: “The movie is likely to score big with audiences, and for the same reason that it’s proven to be a perfect palate cleanser at Cannes. It’s a treat to see popcorn this decadent made by people who know exactly what they’re doing.” The New York Daily News adds: “[T]hanks to a groovy period vibe and the A-list stars, you’re along for the ride… The actors share a convincing chemistry that’s a must for a movie like this to purr… As summer popcorn-style entertainment, The Nice Guys gets the job done.”

Our Take: Ryan Gosling has already won us over. We’ll be there (with popcorn).

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising

Life is good for Mac Radner (Seth Rogen, who also produced and co-wrote the film’s screenplay) and pregnant wife Kelly (Rose Byrne) until the unruly sisters of Kappa Nu move in next door. As the loud parties threaten the sale of their home, the couple turn to ex-neighbor and one-time enemy Teddy Sanders (Zac Efron) for help. Now united with the former college student, the trio devises schemes to get the wild sorority off the block. Unfortunately, the rebellious young women refuse to go down without a fight. Also starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Selena Gomez, and Dave Franco.

Perfect for: Those who’ve seen the first Neighbors movie; those who enjoy college comedies (the plot is centered around grownups vs. the new, noisy sorority next door; in the first film, it was a rowdy fraternity).

What the Critics Say: Funny, and a little feminist. The New York Daily News opines: “The gender may have changed but the stakes and laughs remain high in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising… [Director] Nicholas Stoller finds a way to create resonance with the audience… He's quite good at creating comedy that is gender-neutral, making Neighbors 2 perfectly fine as a date movie for couples… Rogen's well-established routine is clearly maturing with age, helped by the likes of Byrne, who continues to prove her worth as a comic actress. Efron's also quite funny — and when all else fails, he can remove his shirt.”

Our Take: Seth Rogen always makes us laugh. And we know Zac Efron is quite popular among the ladies. We’ll likely giggle loudly through this one.
