This week at the movies: it’s Melissa McCarthy all the time, E.T. texts home, and another unsuspecting demon possession.

Tammy
A Melissa McCarthy vehicle designed to just let McCarthy be awesome for two hours as Tammy, a down-on-her-luck fast food employee who just found out her husband was cheating on her after losing her job, and decides to take a cross country road trip with her… grandmother, played by Susan Sarandon. Hijinks are supposed to ensue.

Perfect For: Fans of the actress and of raunchy comedies.

What the Critics Say: Tammy, despite all McCarthy’s efforts, is a tremendous disappointment. McCarthy’s hubby, Ben Falcone is directing, and he’s lacking the sure hand you need to make this material shine. Writes the New York Times: “How do you solve a problem like Melissa McCarthy? That question feels inescapable after watching her try to powerlift "Tammy," her newest and least funny comedy, all by her lonesome.” And says the Minneapolis Star Tribune: “It's more a pile of incidents than a story. Without a guiding focus, McCarthy's boisterous comic energy runs amok. The result barely holds together as a movie.”

Our Take: We love her, and we’d probably sit through two hours of a bad movie with her in it, rather than any other bad movie without her.

Earth To Echo
Stand By Me meets E.T. for the cell phone generation, Earth to Echo is a PG sci-fi flick that channels those two coming of age stories for a modern tale. In it, a trio of young boys start getting odd messages on their cell phones. They track the source and discover that there are stranded aliens communicating with them electronically (E.T. Text Home).

Perfect For: The whole family, especially those with a bad case of E.T. nostalgia.

What the Critics Say: Mixed reviews. Some think it’s too trite; others are fine with the recycled materials. Writes the Hollywood Reporter: “Despite all those echoes of classic '80s sci-fi fantasy adventures, Earth to Echo proves engaging in its own right.” And, says, the Philadelphia Inquirer: “Sure, Earth to Echo is derivative, but it's refreshingly updated. Echo, I.M. home.”

Our Take: It looks better than the rest of what’s on offer this weekend.

Deliver Us From Evil
It’s not enough for one person to become possessed by a demon. These days, demons must have the ability to spread like some crazy demon virus. Welcome, friends, to the very shaky premise of Deliver Us From Evil (supposedly based on a true story, in that the true part is that it takes place in a city that exists, New York). Starring Eric Bana as a cop who investigates a case of possession but then brings his work home with him (his wife is Olivia Munn), literally, and in the worst way possible.

Perfect For: You don’t have enough Paranormal Activity/Exorcist in your life.

What the Critics Say: Silly rabbit, critics don’t like these movies. They have to be really good. Writes the Seattle Times: “A pretty routine and occasionally silly demonic-possession flick, which distinguishes itself by making us wait so long for the exorcism that heads may be spinning in the audience as well.” And says Variety: “Too silly to be scary, and a bit too dull to be a midnight-movie guilty pleasure.”

Our Take: It’s really futile trying to make the Exorcist better. But keep trying, y’all.
