Summer is almost over and for college-bound gals, this means setting up your dorm room. For some, this may be your first time away from home, and you’ll be sharing a room with a roommate (perhaps another first). Dorm living means downsizing and minimizing — but it can still be stylish.

Bedding: Yes, everyone starts with the same basic bed, but you can make it your own with a stylish comforter and sheet sets that show your personality (whether that’s girlishly pink, or modern, clean and minimalist). Add a cute wall-art headboard made out of decals for even more flair. Choose from styles that are ornate, minimal, art deco, or whimsical. Some roommates like to coordinate their colors or styles, but that’s not necessary. It’s your half-room to decorate your way.

Desk: You’ll be spending a lot of time there hitting the books, so try to make it inviting.Add a decorative and practical lamp, and most importantly, organize the space so you can find everything when you need it. Do away with boring manila folders—add some organizational decorative folders that match the color scheme of your bedspread. Decorative plastic crates add organizational space and can add a pop of color.

Storage: Dorm rooms are small, and the only way it’s going to be able to accommodate your possessions is with a little ingenuity. Utilize large hooks for coats and backpacks and smaller ones to hang jewelry, keys and scarves. Use removable sticky strips so you won’t damage the walls. Buy shelf and drawer organizers so clothes can be put away neatly, and extra baskets and bins always come in handy. Since the room is small, think vertical, and buy stacking units.

Décor: Put up posters, mood boards, buy some cool art, and hang them around your bed and your desk. Don’t forget photos of your family and friends. Black or white boards can let you and your friends swap messages, and many double as large calendars that can help you keep your busy schedule straight.
