Nothing says summer like an outdoor barbecue, and the 4th of July is the perfect occasion to show your patriotic side by decorating the yard in red, white, and blue. But think beyond stars and stripes and instead, choose festive decorations that can also double as home or future party décor once the fireworks have fizzled out. With the right products, your investments will last far beyond Independence Day. Here are our tips for smart party decorating this summer.
Careful with Colors
When decorating, the first step is always deciding on a color scheme. Fortunately, this holiday has already figured that out for you. But rather than splurging on products that feature a red, white, and blue motif, choose different items in each color and layer them together yourself. That way, you won’t limit their use to national days of observance. For instance, blue folding chairs, blue patterned pillows pillows, vases, and candle votives make for refreshing, nautical décor that will come in handy for outdoor get-togethers throughout the summer season. Alternatively, white decorative products can easily be repurposed inside your home (white goes with almost everything), and would make the perfect décor for a summer bridal shower or another party.
Oh, My Stars (and Stripes)!
Like your colors, also be selective with your starred-and-striped décor. Stars and stripes take center stage on the 4th of July but choosing the right decorations can mean the difference between a festive party and an Election Day poll center. While anything with blue and white or red and white stripes can be used outside of the 4th of July (like bench cushions, or table cloths and runners), something that’s covered in both stars and stripes is much more challenging to repurpose after the holiday. Instead of opting for products with both stars and stripes on them, keep these patterns separate (just like your colors) and get creative: let guests spear pigs-in-a-blanket with star-topped cocktail picks, or stick toothpicks with American flags on them into fresh fruit; slurp punch from striped straws; and choose mixed metals for your table settings an extra pop of sparkle (gold and silver look great together and can be used all year long). Lastly, outdoor string lights add warmth to the ambience and are a staple of all outdoor party décor, no matter the occasion.
